Numbers are
the method.
People are the point.

I work in credit risk and banking analytics. I drive business bank strategy by developing insights through data. I also run an Afrocentric label, lift weights, write about economics and markets, and chaired a Toastmasters club.

The thread

Data is only useful
when it changes a decision.

I drive credit strategy for business clients at Capitec Bank. The work decides who the bank lends to, at what risk, and on what terms.

I have done that at two scales. At Standard Bank I was the credit analyst for businesses turning over R5m to R400m, across transport, manufacturing, retail, investments and franchising. I structured deals, wrote credit papers, presented to credit committees, managed portfolios and led restructures, one client at a time. At Capitec I work the same problem at portfolio scale, shaping the strategy that decides for thousands of businesses at once.

The route here was broad on purpose. Economic consulting at Nova Economics, data analytics at Shell SA, business analysis and French interpretation at Evesis, then credit at Standard Bank and Capitec. Each role added something the next one needed: economic reasoning, data fluency, and the ability to translate between technical and non-technical rooms.

Two Master's degrees from Stellenbosch University, in Economics and Industrial Engineering. Numbers and systems thinking, in one head. AWS, Python, PostgreSQL and Power BI day to day, R and econometrics from the academic side. I move between SQL, code, dashboards and credit committee presentations without changing gear.

What I am known for is turning messy data into clear, defensible credit decisions, bridging analytics teams and business stakeholders, and working across industries and client segments in both English and French.

Most credit models predict default.
The useful ones predict it early.

Five years building cloud-native risk systems on AWS: early-warning models, default-curve forecasting, strain monitoring and automated executive reporting.

Senior Data Analyst, Credit Risk

  • Protected over R200 million in credit exposure by architecting and deploying the bank's first Credit Account Management (CAM) system on AWS SageMaker, a Red/Amber/Green risk-tiering model that flagged a high-risk cohort carrying a 25% twelve-month default rate. (PostgreSQL, Python, Power BI)
  • Integrated Experian bureau early-warning triggers (ARODS policy rules) into the CAM dashboard, giving the business its first systematic weekly view of external credit risk and enabling intervention before default.
  • Automated the extraction of government legal gazette PDF documents in Python, screening liquidation, business-rescue and judgment notices against the client book and protecting millions of rands in credit exposure.
  • Forecasted twelve-month overdraft default curves across origination vintages using a vintage-triangle model, flagging high-risk cohorts months before they matured. (Python)
  • Built a monthly strain-monitoring model that scores the entire business transactional book, overdraft and non-overdraft, using IV/WoE/KS screening to rank predictive features and set Red/Amber/Green thresholds. (Redshift, Python)
  • Author the monthly CLS Intelligence Brief, translating macro-economic and sector data into actionable credit insight for the business-banking team.

Thesis: a framework using quantitative methods to detect financial statement anomalies and fraud during the loan application process. It scores the level of fraud present in a client's financial statements, so credit teams can act at application rather than after default.
